With support of Empower Women, through webinar-based learning and one-on-one mentoring sessions, Nora began an initiative to empower girls at her local high school.
Through a three-section extra-curricular course, she covered domestic violence, entrepreneurship and artistry. Nora gave a presentation to the female students about the different types of domestic violence, warning signs of abuse and how they can differentiate between people who are controlling them and people who really love them. READ Centers provide a safe, trusted space for women to gather and learn. READ Centers teach thousands of women to read each year. Savings cooperatives allow women to invest money and then take turns receiving micro-loans to start micro-businesses or invest in education for their children.
One in five Nepali women report going on to start her own income-generating business after joining a savings cooperative and taking skills training at a READ Center. National machineries for the advancement of women have been established in almost every Member State to, inter alia, design, promote the implementation of, execute, monitor, evaluate, advocate and mobilize support for policies that promote the advancement of women.
National machineries are diverse in form and uneven in their effectiveness, and in some cases have declined. Often marginalized in national government structures, these mechanisms are frequently hampered by unclear mandates, lack of adequate staff, training, data and sufficient resources, and insufficient support from national political leadership.
Capacity-building efforts should pay particular attention to the needs of women in order to ensure that their skills and experience are fully used in decision-making at all levels. Priority should be given to ensuring women's and girls' full and equal access to all levels of education and training. Empowerment requires the full participation of people in the formulation, implementation and evaluation of decisions determining the functioning and well-being of our societies;.
