When do merlin and arthur become friends

Grateful for Merlin, the young prince embarked on a dangerous journey in search of a cure, a journey that nearly killed him. Further, in season 1 episode 11, Arthur returns the favor, drinking poison to ensure that both Merlin and Camelot were safe. As a result of the bromance Merlin and Arthur shared, they are best friends in the question of being willing to die for one another.

This leads Arthur to shift is loyalty to the antagonist. This moment showed that Merlin and Arthur weren't necessarily best friends as Arthur was willing to trust another easily. When Merlin was lost throughout the caves, Arthur showed how deeply he cared for his servant when he traveled back, risking his own safety, to find his friend.

Later on in the episode, Arthur was downcast and as a result, Merlin made up a story to help Arthur regain his sense of pride and leadership. Although Merlin showed great valor by saving and protecting Arthur throughout the series, he was often seen to be lacking in his efforts to help Arthur as a servant. As a result, Arthur can be seen on multiple occasions diminishing Merlin through insults and physical play. Unlike his father Uther, Arthur always showed great respect and care for people regardless of their status.

This was one of the noblest acts from the young prince and proved that Merlin was in fact a valuable friend. Then all the liquid could be drunk and it would be from a single goblet. Arthur: You never cease to surprise me. This episode also gives us another obstacle in the relationship that has to be overcome in order for Arthur and Merlin to achieve their destiny Merlin: No! I will drink it!

Arthur: You know me, Merlin, I never listen to you. In 1x12, Merlin and Arthur really only have one real conversation. Merlin: I need to talk to you. Merlin: Not today. Arthur: I sometimes wonder if you know who I am.

Merlin: Oh, I know who you are. Arthur: Good. Arthur: Sometimes I think I know you, Merlin, other times So, we come to the end of S1, where Merlin has come to understand Arthur, and Arthur has gained a little more understanding of Merlin — though Arthur is at a disadvantage, as Merlin must always keep a large part of himself hidden from Arthur. Most importantly, Arthur and Merlin are now both solid in their relationship as master and servant.

Aside 1: Lancelot. He gives Merlin the friendship that Merlin cannot have with Arthur yet. Ironically, the same reasons that make Lancelot a source of hope for Merlin make him the eventual source of confusion and angst for Gwen later on. Gwen loved Lancelot first, because Lancelot was already the man that Gwen eventually loves in Arthur. Series 2 — The Business Friendship. Arthur: I want you to go down there and tell them to stop.

Throughout the course of S2, Arthur comes to depend on Merlin more and more. In 2x08, Arthur relies on Merlin to sneak him out of the castle when Arthur is confined to his quarters. The gestures of friendship we start seeing are small, but noticeable. Such as in 2x03 when Arthur believes Merlin has a crush on Morgana, and he tries to be understanding while he warns him that it will never work. Arthur: This has to stop.

The King would have your head if he found out. Merlin: Denying what? Arthur: Your affections for the Lady Morgana. Merlin: Riiight. Arthur: Take it from someone who knows about women. Merlin: Well if such a person existed, I would. Arthur: Stick to girls who are more On your level. Merlin: Thanks. Arthur, of course, is talking about Gwen here, but this is a pattern that repeats with Arthur throughout S2.

Arthur treating Merlin like a friend or looking out for him as a friend, continues throughout the series. He treats Merlin like a friend when he warns him to leave Camelot, rather than arrest him in 2x The gestures of friendship continue: Arthur allows Merlin to see Gaius in prison when Gaius is falsely arrested in 2x Merlin and Arthur also bond in 2x08 over the fact that they both were raised by a single parent, while never knowing their other parent.

However, the status problem remains, as we see in 2x12 when Merlin and Arthur travel to find Balinor.

Arthur, trying to determine why Merlin is so quiet, states the following:. Merlin: What? This, of course, leads us to S3, where the main goal is overcoming that final obstacle. Merlin: Yeah? Merlin: Yeah, I feel the same. Aside 2 — The Dress Scene 2x I just have to say how much I love the almost throwaway scene in the hallway, when Arthur catches Merlin carrying a dress. Series 3 - Equality.

S3 is all about equality. The transition in S3 tends to happen through plot and what is not said. For example in 3x Merlin: It is your fate to be greatest king Camelot has ever known. Your victory today will be remembered by every age until the end of time. Just trust in yourself. Or in 3x Merlin: Destinies are troublesome things.

Merlin: I read a book. Where we most see the theme of equality though is in the character of Gwaine. Gwaine arrives as someone who already treats and accepts Merlin as his equal, even though Gwaine is secretly of noble blood. He would have been a great knight. Merlin: Maybe one day he still will. Knights are noblemen, always have been, always will be. Merlin: Why should you care? She could do better than that! Merlin: She should be setting her sights Arthur: Merlin?

Merlin: Shut-up? Arthur: You guessed it. It should be noted in the above case that Merlin actually does try to act the part of the servant, before Arthur refuses to let him and demand that he speak his opinion — something that servants are usually forbidding from doing.

As we see in 3x Arthur: You look like a startled stoat. Arhur: Are you saying I look like a toad? Arthur: Merlin! Merlin: Yeah. You ready? Knight Valiant uses a magical shield in Camelot's tournament to beat contestants and Merlin informs Arthur of this. Arthur believes him, but when the witness is killed by one of the serpents and thus the evidence nearly expunged, Arthur disemploys Merlin of his position as his manservant for making him look like a fool in front of his father.

When it's revealed that Merlin was telling the truth, Arthur admits that he was wrong to have sacked him and reinstates him as his manservant, but eagerly reminds him to clean his chambers, wash his clothes, repair his armor, clean his boots, exercise his dogs, air out his fireplace, change his bed, and muck out his stables.

As Gaius and Merlin are examining a very unnatural cause of death in a person, Arthur calls for Merlin, who answers the door, saying he's sorry he's late, but Arthur sullenly frowns and say he's getting used to it. Merlin shows him the flower Gwen gave him but shows casualness in completely ignoring it and tells Merlin to tell Gaius Uther needs to see him.

Merlin asks Gaius why Arthur couldn't have just told him himself, and Gaius explains that it's one of the uses of servants. Arthur, and a group of Camelot's guards, storm into Gaius's chambers, rummaging for any indicative sign of the source of the plague that's befallen Camelot. After searching through the chambers, including Merlin's room, Arthur and the guards shuffle out.

To save Gwen, who's been convicted of being a sorceress as a magic poultice was found in her father's house which cured him of an awful plague, Merlin lunges himself at the mercy of Uther and confesses that he's the sorcerer. The guards restrain him, but Arthur is doubtful that Merlin of all people could be a sorcerer and says that he suffers from an illness of severe gravity and that he's just saying this cause he's in love with Gwen, but Merlin is confounded and, staggering in his speech, tries to argue that he isn't, and Uther lets him go but tells him not to waste his time again.

Arthur, upon the ward's adjuration, accompanies her and Merlin to destroy the Afanc. The creature swings a punch at Arthur but he ducks. Arthur tries to approach it but, at its massiveness, he backs up. Merlin yells to Arthur to use the lit torch, he sticks it in its face and Merlin using magic causes the fire to lash out and drench the creature, killing it. After the death of the Afvanc and the reversal of the affliction in the town's people, Uther has the guards release Gwen and she's reunited with her father.

The sorceress, Nimueh, seen in the previous episode, poisons a chalice. She screened her identity and masqueraded as a handmaiden using the name 'Cara'.
